Some people underestimate this condition and when they see someone who seems to be having the condition, they just dismiss the person as having some kind of low-self esteem problem.

Actually, low self-esteem may be one of the causes of social phobia but there are still several reasons why a person started to develop fear of social situations. It can be related to a chemical imbalance happening inside the body or it can be a physical disorder related to the brain.
When a person is having a social phobia attack, he or she experiences the usual symptoms being experienced by persons suffering from other types of phobia. These may include catching of breath, trembling, and cold sweating. The problem with a person with social phobia is that because the condition puts the patient into something in which he or she will be taking more attention from people. Imagine when a social phobic student who trembles the moment he is called for recitation. The student will feel much more humiliated because of his reactions. As a result, the student foresees this scene happening again and again pushing him to avoid schooling totally. The same case happens to adults.
No man is ever an island but if you have social phobia, you’d always feel relieved when you are alone. But you can’t go on this way in your life forever. Even the most independent persons in the world need outside help and you just can’t escape being away from the society just to avoid being outside the range of your comfort zone. It’s not normal to feel this way and when you are diagnosed to have this kind of phobia, you must make the step and seek treatment for social phobia.
